it’s a quick, easy one but a few details help with planning:
Step Falls Preserve
Distance & Time

  • Trail length: About 0.5 to 0.6 miles one way, so roughly 1 mile round trip to the top of the falls
  • Time: Most people do it in 15–25 minutes one way, or under an hour round trip depending on how much you stop at the pools
    Elevation & Terrain
  • 🥾Elevation gain: About 248 ft total climb to the top
  • Total drop of falls: ~250 ft of cascades, pools, and chutes
  • 💚Difficulty: Rated easy, family-friendly. The path is rooty and steep in spots near the upper falls, but short
    Pets
  • 🐶Yes, dogs are allowed but must be on leash
    Other quick notes
  • 💰 No fees or permits
  • 🚕Parking: Dedicated lot at 1657 Bear River Rd, but it fills fast 11am–3pm in summer. No parking on Route 26
  • ⏳Hours: Generally 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM
It’s basically a 20-minute walk in the woods to a bunch of swimmable rock pools — perfect if you want waterfalls without committing to a big hike.
